Our Small Groups

Welcome to our Emmaus Small Groups! Below, you can find a list of all of our groups, with information about the group leaders, the types of groups, when they meet, and where they meet. Registrations for groups will open in September!

Melissa Peura & Dorothy Phillips

Day: Monday
Time: 5:45-7:15 p.m.
Frequency: Bi-Weekly
Pets: None
Location: 10 Mile & Power
Demographics: Open to all, especially convenient for those parents with children attending the after-school Religious Ed. program.
Bio: Melissa is originally from Massachusetts and has resided in Farmington for the last 20 years. She is married with 4 children and has been a member of OLS parish for 5 years.   Her favorite verse is "Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."  Matt 11:28 

Teens - Heather Smith & Tim Gelletly

Day: Saturday
Time: 5:30 p.m.-7 p.m.
Frequency: Bi-Weekly
Pets: None
Location: 10 Mile & Power
Demographics: Teens in 8th-12th Grade
Bio: Heather grew up in Kentucky and was involved in the youth group there.  She has led retreats as a teenager and loved the strong bonds it created.  She really enjoys being involved with the youth in the community.  Tim is a convert to the Catholic Church, enjoys theological podcasts and rich faith discussions. 

Robert Cybulski

Day: Thursday
Time: 7:00 p.m.

Location: 10 Mile & Power Road
Demographics: Young Adults age 20ish, Single and Married
Bio: Robert is an engineer, who enjoys traveling, playing hockey, and hanging out with friends and family. He's excited about leading this group since it will serve as an extension of the young adult group at Our Lady of Sorrows. If you're looking to connect with other young adults in fellowship and faith, we'd love to have you!

Barb McCulloch

Day: Monday

Location: Middlebelt & Joy - Access to home requires the ability to navigate 3 stair steps.  (group is looking for someone willing to alternate hosting)
Demographics: Mix of men, women singles/couples age 50s thru 70s
Bio: Barbara enjoys gardening, scrapbooking and spending time with family at various family events.  Barb leads the evening Bible Study sessions and is a member of the Bible Study Planning committee.  Barb was a leader and alternate host for ESG since it's inception and has participated in the Christ Life Program.  Barb also functions as a retreat captain for the OLS parish women's retreat group at St. Paul of The Cross.

Cori Michalski & Anne Klein

Day: Tuesday
Time: 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

Location: 10 Mile & Power
Demographics: ages 50 and Up - Men and Women
Bio: Cori is happily retired, loves to garden and crochet and enjoys trying new restaurants.  She has enjoyed her time with the Tuesday morning group leading a weekly scripture study, as well as attending other faith formation classes at OLS. She volunteers her time at St. Leo’s Soup Kitchen, and is a member of the OLS Martha Ministry team. Anne owns a cat sitting service and has loved attending OLS since transferring from the  St. Claires parish.  She enjoys volunteering for C.A.R.E.S. and supporting the clothes closet there.  She has loved participating in the Tuesday scripture study for 5 years and attending various faith formation events.

Lynda and Chris O'Donnell

Bio: We have an open seat waiting for you! We try to meet every other week, however we are open to people's busy schedule. Come on over, we would love to have you in our group.  Lynda's favorite Bible Verse: The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness and self control. (Galatians 5:22-23)

Susan Riggs & Pat Labrecque

Day: Wednesday

Demographics: Single Women age 40's & Up
Bio: Susan enjoys gardening, golfing and cooking. Her two cats, Ben and Jerry keep her company since her two children are grown and are no longer living at home.

  Pat has taught in schools in the AOD, developed adult training materials and worked as an HR Manager.  She likes to volunteer at the local hospice office, seeing new places, shopping, reading, going to new restaurants and mostly just being with family and friends!

Jennifer B. & Nina Gjonaj

Day: Friday
Time: 2 p.m. (an hour before school lets out)
Frequency: Monthly
Pets: None
Location: 10 Mile & Power Road
Demographics: Open to all Women/Mothers of school aged children; especially convenient for those picking up children from OLS.
Bio: Jennifer has been blessed with the gift of wonderful parents who have instilled in her the gift of faith and is a mother of 5 children that attend OLS. Over the years the seed of faith has grown and she enjoys sharing her love for Christ and the Church with others. She has been involved in various prayer groups throughout the years, and recently was inspired to lead an Emmaus.  Nina is married with 4 children that attend OLS and owns a construction company with her husband. Her favorite Bible verse is “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matt 6:33  Jennifer and Nina look forward to making new friends in faith and growing spiritually and socially with other moms.

Zach & Hannah Norman

Day: Rotate Tuesdays or Sundays

Demographics: Recent College Grands and Young Professionals (up to age 35)
Bio: Zach is an engineer who loves entertaining guests, games, movies, video games, and cooking. Hannah is a Librarian by day and Crafter by night.

Erin Somerville & Tim Wahmhoff

Day: Wednesday
Time: 7 p.m.-8:30 p.m.
Frequency: Weekly (Coed on odd weeks and alternating single sex on even weeks)

Location: 12 Mile & Drake
Demographics: Couples or Singles in the "Older Millennials" age range (28-40ish)
Bio: Erin and John Somerville love to spend time with family, travel, and complete DIY home renovations! Their favorite thing to do is spend time playing with toddler son, Johnny. Assistant Leader Tim Wahmhoff and wife Kim also spend a lot of time chasing their little guy, Gabriel. Some favorite things include travel, outdoor adventures and cooking. We regret that we can not offer babysitting but babies who will remain seated on laps are welcome to join us.

Dorothy Phillips & Laura Smentowski

Bio: We are a group of women at all stages of life who get together for the opportunity to share our faith, thoughts, and experiences.  Learning, sharing, and growing in friendship and faith is such a blessing.  If this is something you'd be interested in, please consider joining us.  Favorite Scripture verse of the moment:  [A]nd hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. Jerry & Fran Ashe

Bio: Jerry and Fran originally met in a hospital at the age of 16.  Fran enjoys reading and Jerry enjoys golf & hockey. They both love spending time with their 2-year old grandson.  Their Favorite Bible verse- 1 Thessalonians 1:2 "We give thanks to God always for all of you, remembering you in our prayers, unceasingly”

Bio:  Faith is a junior at FlexTech Novi.  She is currently involved in Jujitsu and she love dogs! Her favorite Bible verse comes from John 6:35, “Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.’”

Veronica is a sophomore at Saint Catherine of Siena Academy. She enjoys competitive Irish dance, track, and learning about any type of science! Her favorite Bible verse is "She is clothed with strength and dignity and laughs without fear of the future”. Proverbs 31:25.

Linda & Mark Kaminski

Pets: No pets at primary home - 1 dog and 1 rabbit when rotating homes
Location: 13 Mile & Haggerty
Demographics: Couples (ages 40-60's)
Bio: Mark and Linda were both born and raised in the Catholic faith and received much of their education in Catholic schools. They have been members of the OLS Parish for over 22 years with faith and prayer being an integral part of their marriage and lives, giving them strength, consolation, and joy. Mark’s favorite bible passage is Ephesians 2:4-5 “But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.” Linda’s favorite scripture verse is 2 Corinthians 12:9 “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.”

Marie Wilkie & Maureen Altermatt

Demographics: Anyone
Bio: Marie loves being Catholic and getting together with like-minded friends - new and old. She is rather fond of cats, reading, knitting, and good food.  She's also eternally single - hence her hobbies.  She was the girl who faked a stomach ache when she had to do oral presentations in grade school, and now she's been leading an Emmaus Small group since the pilot program - the Holy Spirit works in mysteriously wonderful ways! Maureen is a recently retired educator who wishes to continue growing in her faith and service to others. Her favorite bible verse is Philippians 4:6-7.

Tom Szymkowski & Mary Ferrini

Demographics: Couples
Bio: Tom grew up in the Chicago area and worked for the Air Force testing C-130 and F-16 Avionics systems.  Now he works for FCA and volunteers at OLS as an Usher.  He enjoys spending time with his family and supporting occasional service projects.

Mary is wife, mother and dedicated teacher.  She genuinely enjoys learning about and discussing the Catholic faith.
