Our Small Groups

Welcome to our Emmaus Small Groups! Below, you can find a list of all of our groups, with information about the group leaders, the types of groups, when they meet, and where they meet. 

Registration is currently open until September 27th.
We have limited spaces and placement is not guaranteed,
so be sure to register early.

Robert Cybulski

Format: In person, outside for as long as possible
Day: Thursday
Time: 7:00 p.m.

Demographics: Young Adults and College Students, age 20ish, Single and Married
Bio: Robert is an engineer, who enjoys traveling, playing hockey, and hanging out with friends and family. He's excited about leading this group since it will serve as an extension of the young adult group at Our Lady of Sorrows. If you're looking to connect with other young adults in fellowship and faith, we'd love to have you!

Joanna & Neil Kowalik

Format: Outside or Online
Day: Sunday
Time: Afternoon
Frequency: Bi-Weekly

Location: Power & Grand River
Demographics: Couples with Young Children - Childcare provided onsite
Bio: Joanna and Neil are looking forward to connecting with other Catholic parents of young ones in the parish. They have two children under age 6 and their eldest is loving school at OLS.  Joanna enjoys music, crafting, and bargain hunting while Neil enjoys sports, bonfires, and bowhunting. As a family, they enjoy trips to the aquarium or museum, Saturday softball games and a good bowl of ice cream.  They will begin meeting as a group in March.  Couples in this group are encouraged to coordinate and share expenses for onsite childcare. 

Jackie & Anne

College Students

Demographics: Young Adult Women
Bio: Jackie is a current college student who loves coffee and crafting! She is looking forward to growing in faith and fellowship with the ESG members. A favorite verse of hers is 1 Corinthians 13:13, “So faith, hope, love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.”

Anne just completed her fourth year at BGSU studying nursing and musical theatre. She attended an ESG group this summer and was hooked after that. She loves having deep philosophical conversations about faith and is looking for other college students/recent graduates who do as well!

Melissa Peura & Johnna Balk

Bio: Melissa is from Massachusetts and has lived in Farmington for the last 20 years. Married with 4 children, she has been a member of OLS for 5 years. Her favorite verse is "Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."  Matt 11:28

Johnna is a librarian for Oakland Community College and has lived in Farmington for almost 25 years. She and husband Erik have three adult children and one soon to be daughter-in-law. They began attending Sorrows a few years ago after she attended an Endow group. Having been raised in an evangelical church, she decided two years ago to join RCIA and was confirmed.

Cori Michalski & Anne Klein

Demographics: ages 50 and Up - Men and Women
Bio: Cori is happily retired, loves to garden and crochet and enjoys trying new restaurants.  She has enjoyed her time with the Tuesday morning group leading a weekly scripture study, as well as attending other faith formation classes at OLS. She volunteers her time at St. Leo’s Soup Kitchen, and is a member of the OLS Martha Ministry team. Anne owns a cat sitting service and has loved attending OLS since transferring from the  St. Claires parish.  She enjoys volunteering for C.A.R.E.S. and supporting the clothes closet there.  She has loved participating in the Tuesday scripture study for 5 years and attending various faith formation events.

Zach & Hannah Norman

Format: In person with option to call in

Demographics: Young Adults (mid 20's to 30's) Single and Married.
Bio: Zach is an engineer who loves entertaining guests, games, movies, video games, and cooking. Hannah is a Librarian by day and Crafter by night.

John Somerville & Kim Wahmhoff

Format: In Person, Outside as long as possible
Day: Wednesday
Time: 7:30 p.m.-8:45 p.m.

Location: 12 Mile & Drake
Demographics: Couples or Singles in the "Older Millennials" age range (28-40ish)
Bio: John Somerville and his wife love to spend time with family, travel, and complete DIY home renovations! Their favorite thing to do is spend time playing with toddler son, Johnny. Assistant Leader Kim Wahmhoff and her husband Tim also spend a lot of time chasing their little guy, Gabriel. Some favorite things include travel, outdoor adventures and cooking. We regret that we can not offer babysitting but babies who will remain seated on laps are welcome to join us.

Jennifer B. & Nina Gjonaj

Demographics: Open to all Women/Mothers of school aged children; especially convenient for those picking up children from OLS.
Bio: Jennifer has been blessed with the gift of wonderful parents who have instilled in her the gift of faith and is a mother of 5 children that attend OLS. Over the years the seed of faith has grown and she enjoys sharing her love for Christ and the Church with others. She has been involved in various prayer groups throughout the years, and recently was inspired to lead an Emmaus.  Nina is married with 4 children that attend OLS and owns a construction company with her husband. Her favorite Bible verse is “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matt 6:33  Jennifer and Nina look forward to making new friends in faith and growing spiritually and socially with other moms.

Lynda & Chris O'Donnell

Bio: We have an open seat waiting for you! We try to meet every other week, however we are open to people's busy schedule. Susan Riggs

Bio: Susan enjoys gardening, golfing and cooking. Her two cats, Ben and Jerry keep her company since her two children are grown and are no longer living at home.

Bio: We are a group of women at all stages of life who get together for the opportunity to share our faith, thoughts, and experiences.  Learning, sharing, and growing in friendship and faith is such a blessing.  If this is something you'd be interested in, please consider joining us.  Favorite Scripture verse of the moment: " [A]nd hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us." (Romans 5:5)

Kathy & Joe Sparks

Bio: Joe and Kathy enjoy spending time with other couples especially given the opportunity to share faith and fellowship. We strongly value the power of our Sacrament and growing together as a couple. Our favorite Scripture is Romans 8:38-39 "For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor principalities, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

High School Group

Demographics: High School 9th - 12th Grade
Bio: This group is open for all 9th through 12th grade students to join. They meet to support one another in their faith journey and will occasionally gather to have social fun.

Barb McCulloch

Location: Middlebelt & Joy - Access to home requires the ability to navigate 3 stair steps. 
Demographics: Mix of men, women singles/couples age 50s thru 70s
Bio: Barbara enjoys gardening, scrapbooking and spending time with family at various family events.  Barb leads the evening Bible Study sessions and is a member of the Bible Study Planning committee.  Barb was a leader and alternate host for ESG since it's inception and has participated in the Christ Life Program.  Barb also functions as a retreat captain for the OLS parish women's retreat group at St. Paul of The Cross.

Marie Wilkie & Maureen Altermatt

Bio: Marie loves being Catholic and getting together with like-minded friends - new and old. She is rather fond of cats, reading, knitting, and good food.  She's also eternally single - hence her hobbies.  She was the girl who faked a stomach ache when she had to do oral presentations in grade school, and now she's been leading an Emmaus Small group since the pilot program - the Holy Spirit works in mysteriously wonderful ways! Maureen is a recently retired educator who wishes to continue growing in her faith and service to others. Her favorite bible verse is Philippians 4:6-7.

Tom Szymkowski & Mary Ferrini

Bio: Tom grew up in the Chicago area and worked for the Air Force testing C-130 and F-16 Avionics systems.  Now he works for FCA and volunteers at OLS as an Usher.  He enjoys spending time with his family and supporting occasional service projects.

Mary is wife, mother and dedicated teacher.  She genuinely enjoys learning about and discussing the Catholic faith.

Linda & Mark Kaminski

Demographics: Couples (ages 40-60's)
Bio: Mark and Linda were both born and raised in the Catholic faith and received much of their education in Catholic schools. They have been members of the OLS Parish for over 22 years with faith and prayer being an integral part of their marriage and lives, giving them strength, consolation, and joy. Mark’s favorite bible passage is Ephesians 2:4-5 “But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.” Linda’s favorite scripture verse is 2 Corinthians 12:9 “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.”
